When it comes to treating your dog’s glaucoma (this is very common in older dogs), you can use a new product on the market that has been proven to help animals of all types. While animal treatments are new, and it was primarily tested on humans, CBD oil (aka cannabidiol) can be used and administered to your pet in order to help relieve your dog’s symptoms, and aid in the healing process as well. Of course pets don’t receive the same strength as a human, but nevertheless the treatment procedure is about the same (CBD oil is generally administered orally).
What is CBD
CBD oil is made of hemp which is a cannabis plant, but it does not have the same as the chemical makeup as marijuana.
What Is Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a pressure build up within the eye. This pressure buildup causes damage to the optic nerve which leads to loss of vision. What happens is that the aqueous humor becomes built up in the eye. This is a clear liquid the eye naturally produces to function properly. The buildup becomes too much though and this causes pressure known as Intraocular pressure. A healthy eye will only create around 10-20 mmHg as it regulates and drains the correct amounts of aqueous humor.
A dog that has glaucoma suffers with chronic ocular hypertension which is pressure anywhere from 30 to 50 mmHg. Sometimes the reason is from too little amounts of aqueous humor production other times it is due to not enough drainage or even trauma.
The Symptoms of Glaucoma
Dogs may have pain which is the number one symptom caused by the buildup of liquid and pressure. The issue is that it is often hard to diagnose pain in our pets. Dogs may push their heads against surfaces to try to relieve the pains. They may rub their faces on furniture to relieve pressure as well.
Other signs that your dog isn’t feeling well are loss of appetite, or not being as active. Sometimes your dog may have a cloudy pigment over their eye or have a red tint to the color or even blood shot looking. These symptoms are usually over looked though because they can’t physically communicate about their health issues. And unless we are looking for it, it can go without notice.
How Can CBD Oil Help With Glaucoma?
CBD oil is a molecule found within the hemp plant that has been well used by many humans for themselves and pets to help with many ailments. CBD has been proven to help with a multitude of issues such as inflammation, pain, and anxiety.
CBD is not going to get your pet “high”; as CBD oil is mostly produced from hemp which has less THC in it than Marijuana plants. The amount is even a lower chance when it comes to a pet dosage of CBD oil. There is a big difference between a human dose and a pet dosage of CBD oil. The use of CBD oil can reduce the amount of pressure on the optic nerve, which reduces the amount of pain felt from the glaucoma.
